Lemon-heavy water.Anything citrusy. Some people swear by altoid sours! I only got slightly queasy through my pregnancy. Good lucky, honey. I feel for you!
[…] not sure how she’ll pick the winner (Folake, can you tell us??) but leave her a comment right here with your best suggestion and then hop over here to her site to decide what you might pick out. I […]
How about Ginger-root infusion?
Congratulations! And feel free to roll your eyes, but the morning sickness (ms) just means the baby is doing very well! In any case, I always found during my ms that protein helped me out a lot. I also noticed that sticking to an eating schedule helped me combat ms pretty well since getting too hungry can make ms so much worse. So, keeping a cheese stick or something portable with you would be great. And don’t forget the water! Hydration helps too. Sorry for the ramble and love your stuff!
I did a few things.
Sucking on candy canes helped me (strong minty kinds)
also, i sprinkled bitters into some ginger ale. you can buy them at liquor stores and I am sure lots of other places.
bitters
Made from the distillation of aromatic herbs, barks, flowers, seeds, roots and plants, bitters are a liquid used to flavor cocktails, apƩritifs or foods. They are also used as a digestive aid and appetite stimulant. Bitters generally have a high alcohol content and are bitter or bittersweet to the taste. Bitters come in various flavors (including apricot, orange and peach) and have long been employed as digestifs, appetite stimulants and hangover cures.
lastly, I would grate some fresh ginger into ginger ale.

when the thought of putting ANYTHING in your mouth is too nauseating, I did the pressure point with my thumb.
a pressure point about 2 inches above the crease on the inner aspect of the wrist which may provide relieve from nausea. This is referred to as the NeiGuan Pressure Point (or P6.)
Have you tried the wristbands? I don’t remember what they call them (nausea bands?), but there are wristbands with little buttons on them that put slight pressure on pressure points on the insides of your wrists, which helps relieve nausea.
Do you have hyperemesis? I had that with my second pregnancy and would not go so far as to call it morning sickness. I was on my knees begging someone to shoot me for seven weeks before some pretty strong, pretty risky medicine kicked in (Phenergan and Zofran.) If I ever got pregnant again I would probably die of anxiety, just waiting for it to happen again. I feel for you. I don’t understand why they can’t figure out why it happens and how to stop it.
My friend with terrible morning sickness has been known to suck on lemon slices to keep the sickness at bay…strange but true..hope you find something that works! great clothes!!!
Seasickness bands (the ones with the beads) are suppose to do wonders. Also keep a lemon around and sniff it as needed - nice fresh scent to keep all the others away.
Sorry to hear you’re so sick!
I have found a few things that helped. Some prescription, some not!
Ginger helps me sometimes, in some forms. I liked ginger tea and ginger beer (like ginger ale but made with real ginger) with my first. Eating a high-carb snack BEFORE getting out of bed helped sometimes, I kept crackers by my bed.
My sister in law swore by Sea Bands and Preggo Pops, but neither worked for me.
In the end, it got so bad with my first (and third) that I needed medication. Not every day with my first, but as needed. With my third, I had to take it once a day, every day, and that kept it at bay unless I forgot. The medication I was on is called phenergan; it is very safe and I only needed 12.5 mg to have an effect. (I was originally prescribed 25 mg, but that made me sleepy. I found that half the dose had the effect of curbing my nausea very well, unless I saw or smelled a trigger food, without making me drowsy.)
I had pretty severe morning sickness my whole pregnancy so I had a chance to try out a lot of remedies, lol. I found that these ones worked most efficiently for me. For general maintenance and preventive measures I drank herbal tea throughout the day. I tried several combinations and finally found a nice mix of rose hips, lavender, and chamomile at a local store, which I sweetened with honey. It worked very well and tasted pretty good. If you can’t find this exact mix I am sure you could find them individually and just combine them in your cup. For emergencies I ate candied ginger (which I do not like) if I felt like vomiting was imminent or the nausea was very severe and that worked pretty well, although not as well as the tea.
My sister used “candies” called Preggie Pops and swears by them. You can get them at most maternity stores. She was pregnant after I was, so I cannot personally attest their efficacy.
I’ve always had an acute nose and when I was pregnant (and ever after) I felt like I could replace bloodhounds. I worked in an urgent care while I was pregnant so this was especially unpleasant, since we had to disinfect the rooms all the time. I put scented oils on the edges of and just under my nostrils to keep the smells from getting to me. Just make sure that the scent is strong enough to overpower whatever is bothering you, and make sure it is a scent you don’t mind smelling all day! Oh, and the smell doesn’t last an entire shift so you want to keep the oil with you so you can reapply when necessary.
P.S. I a pinch there is always the old standby, saltines and ginger ale. Hope you fell better soon!
Wow, great suggestions here! I have tried almost all. With my previous pregnancy, I was sick the entire time. Even the day I had her. In addition to getting IV for food & dehydration, I was also getting iron treatments due to severe anemia. I know, what was I thinking to go for it the 3rd time? You kinda forget. And when you see that little one of yours, it makes you want another one. Besides, my husband & I heard throughout the pregnancy that each one is different because the truth is, with my first, i was only sick the first three months and the rest of the pregnancy was a breeze.
In any case, I have tried prescribed medications like Zofran and Phenergan. Didn’t work. Phenergan came close, but just made me sleepy all the time.
I tried the sea-bands….all of them.
I tried the crackers - I have them everywhere. In all corners of the house, car, friend’s house…name it.
Ginger ale, I tried that, but my doctor didn’t want me to consume all that sugar. Besides, that just quenched my thirst.
The high carb diet! Lord knows that I have been living on spaghetti, rice, noodles, bread and bagels. So tired of it…hard to throw up. It gets stuck in my throat, and It comes right back out.
Tried sucking on candy canes…nope!
Lemon slices didn’t work either
Things to try:
Grating ginger into ginger ale. May be I can find diet ginger ale somewhere, so I don’t have to deal with all the sugar.
Bitters? Never heard of that. I will have to go and look for it.
Preggo pops! I will google it. Don’t know where to buy. Anne & Amy mentioned it.
Please keep posting suggestions - I really appreciate them. I have tried almost everything thing out there and that’s why I came to you - other Moms!
USA Baby carries Preggo Pops in-store, that’s the only place I’ve seen it in-store.
Like I said, ginger ale did nothing for me, but ginger BEER contains actual theraputic amounts of ginger. It doesn’t have as much sugar and it can be found in many supermarkets’ “imports” sections (it’s from Jamaica, mon.)
You can get the same effect, minus the carbonation, with just an infusion of ginger. You can sweeten with artificial sweetener. You can get ginger tea at Asian markets (look for one that’s just ginger) or make it by chopping some ginger and steeping it in boiling water.
You can also just suck on a piece of raw ginger, or you can eat crystallized ginger (Trader Joes has it cheap and without preservatives.)
Oh, and have you tried acupuncture or pressure points? I have a few friends who swore by that, too!
Thank you, Anne. I appreciate your help. I tried ginger beer yesterday - I couldn’t even smell it. I tried to cover my nose and take a sip, it came right back out.
I’m still on the look out for the preggo pops. I went on their site to try to order online, but couldn’t find it. I may have to go into one of their stores (that’s a drag). The closest one to Beverly Hills is Torrance.
Also, I took Phenergan again yesterday, and I slept for half the day. It makes me so drowsy, and does not help to nausea and excess saliva. I need something to help me dry out my mouth. My meal yesterday was just whole wheat crackers and ginger ale. Boring! I’m starving.
I watch the food network channel when I’m home to see if I can get inspired to eat, or find something that I may want to eat…nothing.
Oh…tried the pressure points. Go figure.
So things to try:
Bitter
Preggo pops
Ginger tea - I will give it a shot again.
By the way, Sprite’s Keeper, I didn’t roll my eyes when I read your comment. You know, I told my son the same thing when he asked why I get so sick with the pregnancy. I told him it’s the body’s way of telling us that the baby is doing really well, and the pregnancy is great. So, thank you much for reminding me. I appreciate it. Unfortunately, protein does not work for me. It’s easy to throw up, but hard to actually consume (sorry for the TMI).
Folake, I’m not trying to be pushy I just want to make sure you didn’t overlook my other suggestion because it’s not on your “to try” list: Herbal tea. (A blend of lavender, chamomile, and rose, sweetened with honey.)
My sis got her Preggo Pops from a couple of different maternity stores, in various malls, they usually have them by the front counter. Have you tried your closest mall?
And a side note, diet sodas are really bad for you. Artificial sweeteners are basically liquid death. Check out a book called Skinny Bitch from the library if you are interested in some info about that (but be warned, the writers have a bad case of potty-mouth). I checked the sources cited and they appear to be legit. And if even half the facts are true, artificial sweeteners should be illegal, they’re that bad for you. (If you do check it out don’t read the chapter about meat, at least not while you are preggers. It’ll definitely make you puke! And probably cry, too.)
ok, sounds crazy but the only thing that settled my stomach was shortbread girlscout cookies! which doesn’t help you much since they only sell them in the early spring!! but maybe try another brand of shortbread! good luck!
that’s the absolute worst feeling!
God Bless! Hope the rest of your pregnancy is healthy and smooth!
Hello Amy,
Apologies! I didn’t over look your suggestion - I thought I mentioned that I couldn’t bring myself into drinking tea - especially if it’s a mix of the combination you suggested + honey. However, I will try it. I will try all suggestions and let you know how it works out.
In reference to diet sodas, trust me, I’m aware. I’m very health conscious. In addition to running 10 miles a day, I watch what I eat - very carefully! But since my pregnancy, I can’t stand anything organic or low fat! I want the real deal. I can’t stand the smell or taste of anything organic. I’m seriously hoping this comes to pass
I have read Skinny Bitch! A great read - made me stop eating meat
By the way, finally tried Preggo pops! Thanks to my girlfriend who went searching for it. She got me a bunch..thinking it would be the answer. Well folks, it didn’t work.
Besides, it added to the excess saliva in my mouth and I couldn’t swallow. It was just wrong. Urrgh!
Thank you so much everyone. I really appreciate it. We are getting close. We’ll have a winner by next week.
Ciao
Guess what? The only things working right now (I can’t believe it!) Ginger beer & bananas! But it seems like I have to drink a bottle every hour. Also, bananas seem to work. So, I’m drinking ginger beer and eating bananas.
Is Anne our winner?
Anne you need to come and claim your price!!!!!! Any one item for you, child or husband
Thank you all for your suggestions, kind words, well wishes, and positive vibe. I really appreciate it.
try peppermint tea. It is great for nausea and works.
Stacey, thank you. I have tried peppermint tea. I have tons of boxes left. It didn’t work
I have come to term with the all day sickness. Just counting down to due date!
