Kids & Toilet Bowls

When Sidney was a kid, I caught him with his hands in the toilet bowl splashing the water. It was all over his face and mouth. Eeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwww! I gave him a bath and soaked him in a bubble bath. I had to constantly monitor him and keep the bathroom door closed at all times. I can’t even begin to count where I have found Sidney (as a kid). He was in the dishwasher once with ketchup all over his face and body. I have a picture of that too. Oh, and when he was a baby, baby?!

His father was babysitting him while I was at work, and all of a sudden, I get this frantic call. It was Sidney’s Dad. He couldn’t find Sidney. I peed on myself. Mind you, Sidney was only, uhmmm, 6 months old?! I was like, “what do you mean you can’t find Sidney? Are the windows open? The doors? Did somebody break in and steal my child?”

I rushed home. As a mother (God bless all mothers out there because he just blesses you with this power and instinct), you feel like you know everything about your child, have all the answers to questions, and feel like you can solve all puzzles.

Something just said, “Folake, check under the bed!” I did. And guess who who was underneath the bed fast asleep and drooling? Sidney! As if nothing happened. He was tucked way in.

“Should I drag him out?” But he looked like an Angel and seemed to be in la la land. At the same time, I didn’t want him to wake up wondering…WTF? So, I pulled him out gently and hugged him tight..still sleeping like a baby!

Well, fast forward 10 years later, my dear Zurhi is just like Sidney! What choice does she have - she looks up to that little man. She did everything so fast and it’s all because of Sidney. She is always in his room, chasing after him, and wants to do everything he does.

Well, you know what? She is addicted to the toilet bowl too.

The first time I saw her in there, I was like OMG. She had a cup and a spoon in there. I don’t even want to question what happened before she got caught, I’m just going to assume that we did catch her before anything could happen. You get? But since then, everything has made it into the bowl. My cds, Sidney’s toys, phone, etc. She loves being in the bathroom whether it’s Sidney’s or ours. So now, we keep all the doors closed, but she’s so tall (thanks to her 6’5” dad) that she now knows how to turn the door knob. She is in the 100th percentile in height. She is a giant! :)

She opens the front door, too and just keeps going, head down running for dear life. She doesn’t look up. (You can imagine the bumps that have arrived on her head as a result.) Does she think she’s smarter than us? We are so on to are tricks.

Sidney alone handles her so well that Greg and I just sit back and enjoy the ride most of the time. Of course, we step in when we need to because we are parents, because that’s what parents do…I think. No, I think it’s better that Sidney steps in. They are so in love with one another and it’s fun to watch.

Sidney just automatically assumes the role/responsibility. He can’t stand to see her cry, he changes her diaper (but not the poop diapers), he feeds her, he puts her to sleep…come on, it’s a fun ride!

Gosh, I love my family!

  1. I can hear you telling this story. Your children are wonderful, beautiful– so full of life. I’ve always loved Sidney, but now you have Zurhi, and it’s almost unbelievable the way she responds to everyone and everything around her– especially to Sidney. It’s obvious that she adores her big bro.

Hugs to you, Folake. Thank you for dragging yourself to the baby shower and for adding that extra umph with your presence and your family.

    Love,
    me

  7. Gbemidele, I do remember. You are a fast learner, though and you are the best aunt to your nieces & nephew.
