I Guess It’s A Free Country

During one of our many visits to DC to spend the holidays with family, my niece and Sidney were having a discussion of some sort. Sidney is a year older than her and she has always looked up to him. They are really close and so great together. Anyway, I think her mom told her “no” to something and she was venting to Sidney.

Sidney said, well, it’s a free country, you can do whatever you want.”

She responded by saying, “Sidney, no it’s not a free country. If it was, white people and black people would get along, Martin Luther King wouldn’t have been killed by trying to save us, and I could wear my bathing suit whenever I want.”

Sidney said, “Bili, don’t listen to anyone. You are free to do whatever you want and if you want to wear your bathing suit everyday, do so.”

Her face lit up. She said, “really?”

Needless to say, the rest of our two-week holiday Bili had her bathing suit on every single day. If we were home, she walked around the house in her bathing suit. If we went out, she wore her bathing suit under her clothes. You couldn’t get her to take them off.

I guess it’s a free country.

  1. I vividly remember Folake telling me this story, as I think I cried for like 5 minutes I was laughing so hard. It still goes down as one of my favorite comments of all time. I LOVE the way that this girl’s brain works. The list of things are so unrelated…it’s beautiful.

By the way, she may have topped it the other day. Getting ready for school, as her mom was trying to get her bundled up for the sub-freezing temperatures outside, Bili shot back, “Mom, why does it feel like I’m the colony, and you’re the British right now?”

If my child was arguing with me in historical themes, I think it would make life so much more interesting. I mean, really, what the hell do you say to a comment like that?
