Got Milk?

Instantly, I knew I had to write a post on this. So much so because I am nursing our newest addition and thriving on doing so for as long as I can (a year) with little or no help from Enfamil (formula). However, I have been challenged by the pain that comes with nursing. It’s amazing how you forget these things. I’m on my third child, and I’m still calling around, researching if this pain is going to last forever. If it’s short term, how short of a term is it?

Seriously, I remember going through it with Sidney and Zurhi temporarily, but the pain was not this serious, and I didn’t bleed. Yup! So, I have been swallowing Ibuprofen every three hours to alleviate the pain. I have also been using Lansinoh by Lanolin; an ointment for breastfeeding mothers to prevent cracked nipples and scabbing. It looks like it’s helping.

More importantly, I have continued to nurse with that sore, cracked, bleeding nipple/breast. According to my mom, that’s the best way to heal. My mom, who is a self proclaimed mid-wife, said the baby’s mouth is the best medicine (by the way, I confirmed this on other websites too). Isn’t it great how the body works?

I also tried having her latch on differently, which made a huge difference!

I love the act of nursing and everything that it entails. The bonding experience, when your baby stares in your eyes…like “thank you mommy for this delicious milk.” Hehehe..priceless!

Feel free to add on any additional tips and suggestions by leaving a comment. Thanks.

  2. My mum advised me to rub on breast milk after nursing, I my vague memorybank on nursing (8yrs) that’s something I remember really helped with the healing of cracked nipples. But overall my advice would be to stick with it and enjoy every minute honey - cos it’ll be over all too soon. Peace x

  6. ooohhh! what fun!!lol! Seriously, it’s an amazing experience nursing a baby - enjoy it as the time goes by so fast. Your mom’s right you have to nurse through the pain and evenly on both sides or you’ll get lopsided :)Also make sure Ameenah’s latched on not on the nipple (common mis-latch) that is too painful but that she latches with some of the areola. I remember being told to:
    bring baby to breast
something about aligning your nipple and baby’s nose to ensure proper latch? (doesn’t sound right - I don’t think I remember this part well-lol!

Happy nursing! BTW - is Zurhi also looking for her turn? :)

  7. First of all, congratulations! We really need to get together (at your convenience, of course), so that we can meet the new babies.

Well, I actually found the Medela lotion to work better than the Lansinoh. It glides on more easily and really helped me healed a lot faster than the Lansinoh.

I also put black tea bags (dipped in COOL water for a few minutes) after each feeding. That seriously made a huge and instantly visible difference.

    Happy nursing!

  8. @NoLimit- Many thanks, dear. Appreciate it.

@Debbie- My mom suggested the same thing. I tried it. Thanks, Deb.

@Jaycee- So cool of you to stop by. Definitely appreciate it. Thanks for your kind words.

    @CA- Thank you!

@Downtheaisle- Lol..I know, right? Running two blogs by the way. Thought I could take time off, but I’m too much of a workaholic. Thanks for stopping by.

@Buki- Yup! I’m trying everything you wrote, but big boobs and tiny little mouth is not exactly a match. Lol. Trying though. Thanks for the link. In re Zurhi, she is really into her little sister, but the whole breastfeeding thing is weird for her. She can’t wrap her head around it:)

@Isela- Thank you! Yes, we do need to get the babies together - just trying to get a handle on 3 kids:)
I will try the Medela lotion. Read somewhere that the black tea/any kind of tea was not a good idea. Hmm…

    Happy nursing to you too.
